Two of the 2014 winners
|Alan Ryan was awarded the IET Postgraduate Scholarship for an Outstanding Researcher of £10,000. Alan holds a BEng and MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the National University of Ireland, Galway, and Trinity College, Dublin, respectively. Currently, he is undertaking a PhD in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland where his research focuses on utilising the natural polymers, collagen and elastin, as a basis for growing blood vessels in the lab using tissue engineering techniques.|
James Gilbert was awarded the IET Leslie H Paddle Scholarship of £5,000. James’s research is in the field of astronomical instrumentation for large optical telescopes. He is developing new ways to enable observations of thousands of stars or galaxies in a single night, by quickly repositioning optical components within the telescope using robotic systems. His work is rooted in electronics and control but also has substantial aspects of software and opto-mechanics, which means he needs to keep abreast of developments across several disciplines.
