IET Achievement Medals
The IET Achievement Medals are awarded to nominees who have made major and distinguished contributions in the various sectors of engineering and technology.
The judging panel will look for outstanding and sustained excellence in one or more activities, for example, research and development, innovation, design, manufacturing, technical management, promotion of engineering and technology.
The medals in the collection include the:
- J J Thomson Medal for Achievement in Electronics;
- The Sarah Guppy Medal for Achievement in the Built Environment;
- Ambrose Fleming Medal for Achievement in Information and Communications;
- Crompton Medal for Achievement in Energy;
- Coales Medal for Achievement in Transport;
- Heaviside Medal for Achievement in Control;
- Nuffield Medal for Achievement in Design and Production;
- Sir Monty Finniston Award for Achievement in any field of Engineering and Technology;
- Sir Eric Mensforth International Manufacturing Gold Medal.
How to nominate
Nominations can be made by clicking onto the on-line nomination form on the right hand side. As part of the nomination process you will be requested to include a brief CV of the person you are nominating. We welcome nominations for women and men from around the world. You do not need to be a Member of the IET to make a nomination or be nominated.
IET Achievement Medals 2011
| The Ambrose Fleming Medal for Information and Communications was awarded to Professor Christos Christopoulos, Professor of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, University of Nottingham, UK for his significant contributions to the scientific understanding of wave phenomena and their interactions with various industrial systems. |
| The J J Thomson Medal for Electronics was awarded to Professor Christofer Toumazou, of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering, Imperial College, UK, for his innovative applications of silicon technology and integrated circuit design and successful applications of semiconductor technology to biomedicine and the life-sciences, most recently to DNA analysis, leading to striking innovations in the fields of genetics and molecular biology. |
| The Mensforth Gold Medal was awarded to Dr Ralf Speth, CEO of Jaguar Land Rover, for his success in turning the company round within a few years. Dr Speth will give the IET's 2012 Viscount Nuffield lecture. |
| The Coales Medal for Transport was awarded to Mr Adrian Newey of Red Bull Racing, UK, who is the only person in history to have designed F1 World Championships winning cars for three different racing teams at McLaren, Williams and Red Bull. |
| The Sarah Guppy Medal for the Built Environment was awarded to Mr John Armitt, Chair of the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), the public body responsible for developing and building the new venues and infrastructure for the Games and their use post 2012. In this role, as in previous roles, he has demonstrated leadership of the highest order, controlling and reducing costs, applying best environmental practice and working effectively with Governments at the highest level. |
| The recipient of The Sir Monty Finniston Award 2011 is Professor Theodore Rappaport, Chair in Engineering, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, The University of Texas, USA, for his outstanding academic and industrial contributions over almost three decades in the field of wireless communication. |
