History

A brief history of the lecture

The Clerk Maxwell Lecture was initiated by the IERE in 1951 in honour of Scottish physicist, James Clerk Maxwell.

It was retained after the merger with the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) as a “most prestigious lecture event” to be held when suitable speakers and subjects arose (approximately every third year).

The IEE and IIE merged in 2006 to become the IET, and now this lecture is in the IET’s Prestige Lecture Series. It is run every year on a power related subject.
