Benchmarking and Investment for Sustainable Models

11:25 Session 3:   Benchmarking Britain: The Technology, the Cost and the Consumer Penetration

This presentation is based on the numerous studies of the FTTH Council Europe and will first give an overview of the situation of FTTH in Europe and worldwide. Then it will discuss the three aspects of sustainable development: society, economy and environment.

The presentation will prove:

  • FTTH and Environmental Sustainability: why FTTH- networks have a positive impact on the environment
  • FTTH and Economic Sustainability: how FTTH can contribute to economic growth
  • FTTH and Social Sustainability: why FTTH improves the quality of life
  Chris Holden, Board of Directors
FTTH Council Europe

12:10 Session 4:  Business Model - Who Makes the Investment and Where?

  • Who is placed to invest and how do service providers access the fibre?
  • The government subsidy and seed funding
  • The impact of government policy on content
  • Super fast networks to rural areas

Ben Willis, Head of Technology Intelligence
OFCOM

12:55 Lunch

Advancements in Technical Concerns and Future Demands

13:50 Session 5:   What's next beyond current fibre access solutions?

We are at the start of a large project to deploy fibre into the access network in the UK. There are similar efforts worldwide at various stages of maturity. Even though technologies such as GPON are only just being deployed, we still are thinking about what comes next. There are standards emerging to increase the access fibre capacity by a factor of four with 10Gbit/s passive optical networks (PONs) and there are solutions that can provide up to 1Gbit/s per subscriber on a PON. This talk will take a look at these emerging solutions and considers the relative merits of each. Key challenges for the optical technology will be highlighted and potential pitfalls when planning future proof fibre infrastructure will be discussed.

Derek Nesset, Fibre Access R&D Lead
BT

14:35 Session 6:  Open Panel Discussion

This session is an opportunity for delegates asking questions from the floor pertaining to their organisational and individual needs to hear answers, solutions and experiences from this expert panel.

IET Photonics Network, BT, FTTH Council Europe, Fibrecity

15:20 Networking Break and Refreshments

15:40 Session 7: 200 Mbps and Beyond

  • The strengths of a fibre optic network
  • Launching 50Mb and trialling 200Mb – what we’ve learnt
