Take Your Place FAQs

How can I donate to the IET and how will my contribution be recognised?

When you make a donation of £1,500, we will recognise your contribution by engraving your name or the name of someone special of your choice, on a seat plaque in the Kelvin lecture theatre and on a foundation block in the Foundation Wall. The lecture theatre and Foundation Wall are both located on the ground floor of the newly refurbished IET London: Savoy Place. The seat plaque will remain in place up to the next seat refurbishment and the foundation block for the lifetime of the Foundation Wall. We will send you or the recipient of the gift a certificate with the confirmed wording for your seat and foundation block.

When you make a donation of £750, your generosity will be acknowledged with your name or the name of someone special of your choice, engraved on an foundation block in the backlit Foundation Wall.  The wall is located in the entrance hall of the newly refurbished IET London: Savoy Place. The foundation block will remain in place for the lifetime of the Foundation Wall.  We will send you or the recipient of the gift a certificate with the confirmed wording for your foundation block.

What can I have on my seat plaque or foundation block?

You can have up to 30 characters (including spaces) on each seat plaque or foundation block such as “William Webb FIET” or “The Webb Family”. This will remain on the seat plaque up to the next seat refurbishment or for the lifetime of the Foundation Wall.  Please make sure your wording is sensible and befits the IET’s standing as we will have to turn it down or subsequently remove it if it is not. It is your responsibility to ensure that the details provided for engraving are correct.

How long will it be before I see my name or wording?

It may take up to three months after the receipt of your donation for your wording to be engraved.

Can I put my company's name on the plaque or block?

At this time, we are not accepting company names on the Foundation Wall or on seat plaques. The wall is intended to celebrate the contribution of individual donors through the inclusion of their own name or the name of someone special to them.

Can I choose my seat and sit in it?

We are not able to offer you a particular lecture theatre or seat – these will be allocated in the order in which we receive donations, with the Kelvin Lecture Theatre (ground floor) being allocated first followed by the Turing Lecture Theatre (second floor). If you make several donations, your seat plaques will be situated next to each other whenever possible. Unfortunately, your donation will not entitle you to admission to individual events or mean that you will certainly be allocated that seat for a particular event.

How many seats and foundation blocks are available?

There are 626 seats and 1,000 foundation blocks in total, so please donate very soon if you would like this type of recognition.

Please note that we may sometimes have to temporarily remove the seat with your plaque on it if we need the space for a wheelchair user and we hope for your understanding in such case.

Who handles the donations and what will that cost the IET?

Donations will be processed online by Virgin Money Giving and not by the IET as this is the most cost effective way of doing so. Virgin Money Giving deducts 2% from your donation for this service, plus 1.45% card processing fee (1.6% for American Express and PayPal) which includes Gift Aid processing services on the IET’s behalf. Unfortunately, the IET cannot accept payments over the telephone or in person but we can accept cheques. If you would like to pay by cheque, please contact us by telephone +44 (0)20 7344 8456 or email typ@theiet.org and we will send you the form to complete and return with your cheque.
