Molecular communications for nano-scale applications

Molecular communications is an emerging bio-inspired wireless technology that can prove to be superior to current wireless systems in complex and nano-scale environments.

This is achieved by embedding information in the altered property of chemical molecules.

The judging panel commented:

"This is a new technology that uses specifically chosen, currently airborne, molecules as a way to send digital information.

"Although normal throughout the biological world, it is highly novel as a machine approach, with the potential for many new applications such as interfacing to nanoscale artificial devices in medical applications."

Smartphone probe for monitoring remote patients transmitting wireless healthcare data

Our patented 3D-printed healthcare probe attaches onto patient’s smartphone, adjusting vibration intensity to assess sensation loss. The novel app enables patients to self-measure their sensation level which affects 2% of the UK population.

Data is transmitted wirelessly, alerting clinicians, removing travel costs, reducing NHS consultant’s time and improving healthcare data consistency.

Entries to the IET Communications Innovation Award category will be considered for innovation in all aspects of communications.
