Maggie Philbin to host award evening
In a bid to encourage the innovative spirit amongst engineers, the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has launched the IET Innovation Awards 2008.
A nationwide search is underway for the most imaginative and inspiring developments in engineering. IET Chief Executive, Robin McGill, said, “Innovation is about recognising relevant market needs and opportunities and generating bright ideas to make these a reality.
"We’re looking for true entrepreneurs, not in a financial sense but in the sense that they are prepared to take risks, seize opportunities and develop a vision into technology that can change lives.”
This year the IET Awards ceremony will take place on Monday 3 November 2008 at the Park Plaza Riverbank, London. The event will be hosted by Maggie Philbin, who currently covers technology for BBC Breakfast News on their regular ‘Tomorrow’s World’ features, having spent 10 years on the cutting edge science programme of the same name. |

Maggie said, “I'm delighted to be hosting the IET Innovation Awards for 2008 because they are such a significant reminder of the range of talent and expertise which exists in the world. Obviously it's important to reward innovation and achievement but highlighting the huge range of opportunities within engineering and technology is a powerful way to encourage more talent into the professions. I'm very much looking forward to meeting the winners and hearing their stories.”
Now in their fourth year, the awards are a showcase for the brightest ideas, highlighting the importance of innovation by celebrating its application across a range of engineering disciplines.
Entries will be judged by a panel of recognised industry leaders and engineering experts, and are being called for from organisations and individuals with an innovative engineering project, product or process for commercial use, that demonstrates genuine innovation and represents a significant technological advance.
The award categories are: Asset Management, Built Environment, Electronics, Emerging Technologies, Information Technology, Power and Energy, Product Design, Project Team, Robotics, Control and Instrumentation, Security, Software in Design, Start-ups, Sustainability; Telecommunications and Transport.
