Technical visits

A showcase of cutting edge facilities

Delegates at this year’s course will again have a choice of technical visits to undertake. The visits will place key aspects of the course into a real world context and showcase cutting edge facilities in the Greater London area.

These technical visits will be available on a first come-first served basis and the organisers of REIS 2009 are extremely grateful to our various hosts for these unique opportunities for delegates.

As a delegate of the course, you can choose from one of the following:

Technical visit 1: London Underground's Power Control Centre

Delegates at REIS 2009 will have the opportunity to visit London Underground's Power Control Centre where the Power Supply Network and traction systems at High and Low voltages are controlled and managed operationally on a day to day basis.

Attendees of this technical visit will benefit from;

  • The opportunity to see the SCADA based systems in operation and discuss how it works with senior operational and engineering staff
  • The opportunity to see how the systems are arranged and presented to the operator to
simplify the process of operation in the control room environment
  • The opportunity to undertake a tour of an operational traction substation which will entail a detailed technical explanation of the types of equipment installed and also how this interacts with the SCADA system
  • Maintenance personnel will also be present to explain the workings of the primary plant in the substation and show the circuit interruption medium and types of switchgear in use today, where this is possible within the time allowed.

Please note: The LU visit will be split into two groups as the overall numbers in the control room at any one time need to be limited. The visitors to this facility will therefore be restricted to a maximum of 25 (total) to this facility and it will be strictly on a ‘first come-first served’ basis.

Technical visit 2: Docklands Light Railway Control Room and Main Depot

Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the DLR Control room and Depot at Poplar.

The main control room at Poplar controls the operation of the railway and the traction power supplies on the DLR network. The depot provides the maintenance and refurbishment facilities for rolling stock.
The technical visit will provide attendees with an insight into the control and operation of various electrical traction systems on the DLR network.

Technical visit 3: Tube Lines Rolling Stock and Depot

The final technical visit at REIS 2009 will focus on that vital component of the Railway network; Rolling Stock. Delegates who select this option will be shown around the Depot, where they will have the opportunity to view the London Underground style of track.

The visit will also take in examples of the GEC Alsthom Metro Cammel manufactured ‘1996 Tube Stock’, which uses a GTO Inverter Drive and an AC traction motor. This stock is currently in use on the London Underground Jubilee Line.

Delegates interested in attending this technical visit should come equipped with sturdy, flat footwear. Tube Lines will supply rail approved High Visibility vests and eyewear, but any delegates who wish to bring their own can do so.
