Technical visit
A showcase of cutting edge facilities
Delegates at this year’s course will again have a choice of technical visits to undertake. The visits will place key aspects of the course into a real world context and showcase cutting edge facilities in the Greater London area.
These technical visits will be available on a first come-first served basis and the organisers of REIS 2011 are extremely grateful to our various hosts for these unique opportunities for delegates. Please note that delegates will be responsible for their own Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Please contact Kim Tarbet for specific information on a visit by visit
As a delegate of the course, you can choose from one of the following:
Technical visit 1: 400/25 kV Feeder Station
Book early to take advantage of this very rare opportunity to access a 400/25 kV EDF Energy compound.
Staff at this feeder station will be on hand to educate REIS delegates about the workings of the installation, granting vital information on new supply arrangements for the United Kingdom. Please note that places are limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis.
As stated above, delegates are responsible for the own PPE. Should you wish to attend this technical visit, the following, Network Rail standard PPE WILL be required
- Orange overalls (Flame retardant)
- Hard Hat
- Safety footwear
- Eye protection
- Gloves
- Ear protection
Technical visit 2: London Underground's Power Control Centre
Delegates at REIS 2011 will have the opportunity to visit London Underground's Power Control Centre where the Power Supply Network and traction systems at High and Low voltages are controlled and managed operationally on a day to day basis.
Attendees of this technical visit will benefit from:
- The opportunity to see the SCADA based systems in operation and discuss how it works with senior operational and engineering staff
- The opportunity to see how the systems are arranged and presented to the operator to simplify the process of operation in the control room environment
- The opportunity to undertake a tour of an operational traction substation which will entail a detailed technical explanation of the types of equipment installed and also how this interacts with the SCADA system
Maintenance personnel will also be present to explain the workings of the primary plant in the substation and show the circuit interruption medium and types of switchgear in use today, where this is possible within the time allowed.
Please note: The LU visit will be split into two groups as the overall numbers in the control room at any one time need to be limited. The visitors to this facility will therefore be restricted to a maximum of 25 (total) to this facility and it will be strictly on a ‘first come-first served’ basis.
Technical visit 3: Docklands Light Railway Control Room and Main Depot
Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the DLR Control room and Depot at Poplar.
The main control room at Poplar controls the operation of the railway and the traction power supplies on the DLR network. The depot provides the maintenance and refurbishment facilities for rolling stock.
The technical visit will provide attendees with an insight into the control and operation of various electrical traction systems on the DLR network.
