Dr John Walker (Chairman), Thales
Dr Walker has 35 years’ experience in physics and electronics R&D. From 1980-1998 he was Technical Manager with Racal Research. His ITS interests date from 1983, as Manager of the Mobile Information Systems Large Demonstrator and other projects. He is now Technical Manager (Engineering) at Thales Translink, (formerly Thomson-CSF-Racal). He has published numerous scientific papers and edited two books: “Mobile Information Systems” (1990) and “Advances in Mobile Information Systems” (1998), published by Artech House.
Mike Hayward, Transport Logic Ltd.
Mike is former Chair of the Automotive Road Transport Systems Executive Team.
His areas of expertise include; Intelligent Transport Systems. Advanced Highway and Traffic Management Systems, Vehicle Telematics and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems.
Professor Phil Blythe, University of Newcastle
Phil is Chair of The IET’s Transport Sector Panel and a member of the Automotive Road Transport Systems Executive Team. His areas of expertise include; Road user Charging, smartcards, delivery of information, mobile communications, special needs/assistive mobility technologies, e-services and general ITS technology, useability and policy issues.
Alan Stevens, TRL
Alan is a Senior Research Fellow at TRL Limited (the Transport Research Laboratory) in the UK where he has been working on the application of new technology to transport for nearly 15 years. He trained as a physicist and undertook research work on early image processing of numberplates for the Home Office. Currently he is working on human factors and drivers-interaction with technology, and he participates in standards development as an international expert. Recent work has also included electronic vehicle identification, road charging and taxation systems, and studies concerning the strategic development of Intelligent Transport Systems.
Andrew Pickford, Transport Technology Consultants
Andrew is an active member of the Automotive Road Transport Systems Executive Team. He designed an end-to-end demonstration ETC system in 1988 as part of the UK’s first trial at Dartford River Crossing in the UK, Europe’s busiest toll plaza. Andrew also project managed trials in China, Malaysia, Brazil and France over the period to 1994, culminating in successful demonstrations on the Sawgrass Expressway in Florida, the New Hampshire Turnpike then on the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) as part of the competitive trials as part of the first E-ZPass technology procurement. Andrew Pickford has been chair of the ITS (UK) Road User Charging Interest Group since November 2003.
