The civilian use of UAVs is receiving increasing attention and is now seen as a huge potential growth area. Applications are foreseen in diverse areas including agriculture, environmental and atmospheric sensing, emergency and disaster management or police surveillance.
However, the safe operation of UAVs, especially autonomously, presents a number of significant challenges.
This event will provide a single forum for the discussion of regulatory and practical issues important to everyone interested in the research, design and use of UAS in the civilian sector.

| Chair's welcome note
Dr Tony Dodd, Senior Lecturer in Aerospace Systems Engineering, Department of Automatic Control and Systems Engineering, The University of Sheffield, UK |
"Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or unmanned aerial systems (UAS) are an increasingly common sight in the news. Their reputation is founded on military applications and deployments but there is increasing interest in the deployment of UAVs for civilian applications. The range of potential applications covers police and law enforcement, fire and rescue services, agriculture, environmental monitoring, infrastructure inspection, disaster response amongst many others.
However, before UAVs can be routinely deployed for civilian application a number of issues remain. This seminar will explore the many issues related to civilian UAVs including autonomy, regulation and certification.
The seminar brings together researchers, regulators, UAV developers and end-users to provide a wide perspective on how UAVs can be brought from the military to civilian applications.
In addition to the many interesting talks during the day, we will be concluding with a panel discussion on how we can improve the public perception of UAVs."
