Jim Baker

Jim Baker is the founder and CEO of Moovera Networks, a UK-based developer of award-winning fixed and mobile routers that bridge Wi-Fi and Ethernet with carrier-class networks including 3G/HSPA and WiMAX.

Prior to founding Moovera in 2006, Jim was CEO of Telabria, a wireless ISP that launched one of the first and largest wide area WiMAX-class networks in the UK. Before this Jim was based in California where as CEO he led two successive streaming media companies from start-up to acquisition, working with companies including Apple, Reebok and Time Warner on their online video strategies.

Jim is a voting member of the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, a member of the IEEE and IET, and an active member of the WiMAX Forum Service Provider Working Group.

Jim is a regular speaker at events around the world on the convergence of wireless technologies.

   

Pierre Chastanet

Pierre Chastanet is Project Officer in the Unit "Future Networks" in the Directorate-General Information Society and Media of the European Commission, in Brussels, Belgium.

He is in charge of Research Programme management in the field of Network and Communication technologies and the Internet of the Future since 2006, where he handles a large portfolio of FP6 and FP7 projects in the area of Broadband for All, Converged and Optical Networks, and Radio Access and Spectrum.

Pierre held previously various IT management positions in a Fortune 20 company in the US, the UK and Belgium, including Head of Global ICT Innovation.

Pierre Chastanet holds an M.S. in Telecommunication Engineering from Paris Graduate School of Telecommunication Engineering (Telecom ParisTech, 1998) and a M.A. in International Politics from the Free University of Brussels (ULB, 2005)

Lance Hiley

Lance Hiley is VP Market Strategy at Cambridge Broadband Networks where he is responsible for all outbound marketing, market and channel development and corporate brand development.

Before joining Cambridge Broadband Networks, Lance worked for Anite Telecoms where, as Marketing Director, he contributed to its future products roadmap and led its entry into the WiMAX protocol testing marketplace.

Lance has worked for other wireless companies including Lucent Technologies Microelectronics, and Parthus plc where he has successfully defined products, identified target customers, and managed alliances and acquisitions in Asia, Europe and North America.

Rainer Kölle

Rainer Kölle is an ATM Security expert with EUROCONTROL, ATM Security Domain, which he joined in April 2005. Rainer has worked in aviation and air traffic management throughout his career. Prior to joining EUROCONTROL, he served as a career officer in the German Air Forces with 18 years service experience in total. During this time he was seconded to various international organisations.

Rainer represents EUROCONTROL in various standardisation activities, R&D projects and policy guidance working groups (e.g. EUROCAE WG72, SESAR, ECIP). He is active in a number of security and risk analysis networks on crisis management, critical infrastructure protection and ATM/aviation security.

Rainer's research focus is on time-critical decision making in aviation security, decision making under uncertainty and real-time threat assessment, high-level and distributed information fusion/communication systems and shared situation awareness. He further has a strong background in cognitive system engineering, resilience engineering, complex adaptive systems and network centric operations.

Rainer holds a Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of the Bundeswehr and a Bachelor degree in Economics. He is currently enrolled in a part-time PhD programme with Lancaster University, Aviation Security Group.

Rudiger Meisenburg

Dr. Rudiger Meisenburg currently is in the position of Sales Director Central and Eastern Europe for Aperto Networks.

Before that Rudiger held various sales and management positions in the communications industry with Cambridge Broadband, Adaptive Broadband, RadioLAN, Allied Telesyn and Nixdorf Computers.

Rudiger graduated in Computer Science from Technical University of Berlin. He holds a PhD from Technical University of Berlin in Digital Signal Processing.

   

Niall Murphy

Niall is co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer of The Cloud, where he leads on strategy and strategic business development for the company.The Cloud is the largest public WiFi network operator in Europe and the pioneer of the neutral host network operator business model for wireless broadband mobility. The Cloud was selected as a Technology Pioneer for 2006 at the World Economic Forum this year in Davos.

Niall is an experienced entrepreneur and technologist, and has devised, financed and built several successful communications technology driven enterprises over the past 12 years. Previous activities have included telecoms policy, TMT investment, and scenario-based analysis.

   

Hikmet Sari

Hikmet Sari has been Chief Scientist of SEQUANS Communications since December 2004. He has also been Professor and Head of the Telecommunications Department at SUPELEC (which is one of the leading engineering schools in France) since April 2003. Previously, he held scientific and key management positions at Philips, SAT (SAGEM Group), Alcatel, Pacific Broadband Communications, and Juniper Networks.

Dr. Sari is a world-renowned expert in the field of digital communications. He has published over 180 journal and conference papers, filed over 25 international patents, and he has given numerous invited talks in Europe, North America, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America. He is a Fellow of the IEEE and a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Communications Society. He received the André Blondel Medal from the SEE (France) in 1995 and the Edwin H. Armstrong Award from the IEEE Communications Society in 2003.

He has served as an Editor for several international journals including the IEEE Transactions on Communications, IEEE JSAC, IEEE Communications Letters, European Transactions on Telecommunications (ETT), and the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking. He was Technical Program Chair of the 2004 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC 2004), June 2004, Paris, and Executive Chair of ICC 2006, June 2006, Istanbul. He is also General Chair of the forthcoming PIMRC 2010.


   
Charles Curry

Charles Curry is founder & Managing Director of Chronos Technology Ltd. Charles graduated in Electronics from Liverpool University in 1973, and started his career in semiconductor research at GEC Hirst Research Centre, progressing to Racal Instruments where he was responsible for sales of test equipment including specialist frequency and time products. In 1983 Charles supplied some of the first civil GPS receivers to the Oil exploration industry whilst MD of GSE Rentals.

He founded Chronos, a leading system integrator for synchronisation and timing products in the UK telecom industry, in 1986. Charles founded the International Telecom Sync Forum (ITSF) in 2001 and chairs the ITSF Steering Group. He is also a member of the Workshop in Sync in Telecommunications Systems (WSTS) Steering Group which meets annually in Boulder, Colorado. Charles is on the Steering Group for the DIUS Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN) for Location and Timing and Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Executive Team for the Communications Network. Charles is also a member of the Industry Advisory Board to University of Bath, Electrical and Electronics Faculty.

Dr Sean Sonander

Dr Sean Sonander has over 10 year’s industrial experience in the Telecommunications industry. His experience ranges from large blue chip organisations such as News Corporation and Tandberg Television, through to start-up companies, in areas such as systems project management, systems design and commercial management.

Sean began his career in Telecommunications after a degree in Physics and a PhD in Satellite Telecommunications, which was sponsored by the European Space Agency. The subject of his thesis was ‘Error Correction, Modulation and Synchronisation for Deep Space Transponders’.
Sean gained an international reputation by helping to drive the WiMAX 802.16 standards body.
Sean has since gone on to project lead several multi-millions value and leading edge projects in wireless telecommunications, including WiMAX and DVB-RCT systems.

More recently, Sean’s MBA from Cranfield University has focussed his expertise on the commercial side of Telecommunications, bringing together technical and commercial excellence, with strong academic partners.

In Sean’s latest appointment is as General Manager for Rinicom Ltd., he is responsible for driving forward business growth through managing all aspects of marketing, new product development and existing products.

   

Dr. Karl Woodbridge

Dr. Karl Woodbridge joined University College London in 1990 after 11 years working for Philips Electronics latterly as a project manager in the semiconductor electronics area. He is currently a senior member of the academic staff in the Sensor Systems and Circuits group and his research interests are mainly centred on RF and wireless sensors and networks.

Current research activities at UCL include multistatic radar systems, radar target detection, tracking and classification and pervasive passive detection using wireless transmissions. His research activities have been carried out in research investigator and technical consultancy roles for a wide range of customers in the civil and defence areas.

He is a Chartered Engineer, a Fellow of the IET, a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and a visiting academic at the University of Cape Town. He has published or presented over 150 journal and conference papers in the above areas.

   

Marcos D. Katz

Marcos D. Katz received his BSEE degree from Universidad Nacional de Tucumán, Argentina in 1987 and his MSEE and PhD degree from University of Oulu, Finland in 1995 and 2002, respectively.

Dr. Katz has worked in different positions at Nokia Networks, Finland from 1987 to 2001. He was at the Centre for Wireless Communications, University of Oulu, Finland in 2001-2002. From 2003 to 2005 he worked as Principal Engineer at Samsung Electronics, in South Korea. Since 2006 he is working as Chief Research Scientist at VTT, The Technical Research Centre of Finland.

Dr. Katz has edited the books Cooperation in Wireless Networks: Principles and Applications (2006, Springer), Cognitive Wireless Networks (2007, Springer) and WiMAX Evolution: Emerging Technologies and Applications (2008, Wiley). He has published over 80 conference and journal papers, has 30 granted international patents and more than 20 pending.

In years 2006-2007 Dr. Katz was the vice-chair of Working Group 5 (short-range communications) of the Wireless World Research Forum, and since 2008 he is the chair of the group. Dr. Katz was the technical manager of the EU FP6 project WEIRD (WiMAX Extension to Isolated Research Data networks).

Vince Hart

Vince Hart is a management and development consultant with almost thirty years of professional experience gained in the UK, Central and Eastern Europe, Asia, the Pacific and Africa.

His efforts have been focused on addressing a wide range of local and international development challenges and capacity building needs within the public, private and voluntary sectors. From early employment as a business advisor he followed a career progression in UK Local and National Governments before joining the international civil service and has undertaken consultancy for a diversity of organisations including DFID, DTI, EC, WB, and the UN.

He has completed a wide range of technical and leadership commissions, often requiring senior level mentoring within national Governments, as well as facilitating participatory planning, organisational development and project management assignments, on occasions involving the implementation of ground breaking initiatives.

In the recent past he has held several senior level appointments in the post conflict environments of the Solomon Islands and Afghanistan where the fundamentals of functional society were being re-established. Since 2002, he has been active in the development and supervision of both the DTI funded “Russian Closed Nuclear Cities Programme” and the "UK Programme" addressing the social and economic consequences of nuclear power plant closures where he worked with a diversity of organisations in Russia, Lithuania and Ukraine.

He has post-graduate qualifications in resource planning, economics and management from Cranfield University and is a member of the Chartered Management Institute.

   
Anthony Fulgoni

Anthony is EMEA Business Development Director for SkyPilot Networks.

SkyPilot Networks is a leading provider of carrier-class broadband wireless equipment that enables rapid and cost-effective deployment of network services, including last-mile Internet access, voice over IP, Wi-Fi hotspots, video surveillance, and other wireless applications.

Prior to SkyPilot he spent eight years at Proxim Wireless and was actively involved in the development of their business in the wireless LAN and broadband wireless markets throughout EMEA.

Before joining Proxim, Anthony was International Sales Manager for Dr Solomon’s, a provider of virus protection software solutions. In this role he was responsible for the management of distribution partners throughout Europe, India, South Asia and South America.

Prior to Dr Solomon’s, Anthony worked in several roles at Insignia, a provider of provisioning-infrastructure software to mobile operators. Whilst at Insignia, a winner of two Queens Awards for Export and Technology, he had the honour of meeting and presenting to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

He has over 20 years of experience in the technology industry, is a keen rugby supporter and an aspiring FA certified soccer coach.

   
Dr Yim Ling

Yim is a Consulting Director at Ovum with over twenty years' working experience in wireless, telecom and technology business

Yim has worked across Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North America. Prior to joining Ovum, he worked with a number of blue chip companies and professional services organisations. He was Research Director in MSI, VP of Wireless Solution Architecture in Marconi, Head of Architecture in Vodafone and Head of Network Engineering in Freedom4, where he was responsible for design, plan and optimise the WiMax network in UK.

Yim holds a Doctorate degree and an MSc degree with distinction from the University of Essex. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Member of IET.

   

Nader Zein

Currently Nader is the WiMAX Solution Director in NEC Europe and he is the local manager for the Wireless Access Group in Network Lab Europe in London. Nader leads NEC's WiMAX standardization activities and represents NEC at the WiMAX Forum.

Nader received his Master degree in Digital Electronic System from City University London in 1987 and PhD in Communications Technologies from King's College University of London in 1991.

His academic research interest includes advanced signal processing, diversity, coding and Advanced Antenna System and techniques for wireless systems. Nader has over 40 publications related to his research interest.

From 1991 to 2000 he spent his academic career as lecture at King's College London, Abertay University in Dundee Scotland and Lancaster University in England. Since 2000 he has been working at NEC.

While at NEC he worked on standard development for Point-to-Point and Point-to-Multi-Point radio systems as well as DVB standards.

Since 2004 Nader has been focusing his research and standard activities on WiMAX and Cognitive radio technology. He is the chair of the Certification Process group in WiMAX Forum.

Annette Henley

Annette Henley is a Chartered Engineer employed as Lead Engineer on the NPIA Mobile Information Programme. She originally joined PITO in October 2005 as support engineer to its Mobile Data Project and transferred to NPIA on its creation in April 2007.

Her previous experience was as the Senior Engineer in the Private Business Systems Unit of the Radiocommunications Agency specialising in regulatory and technology development of private mobile radio and wireless LANs.

Dr. Natalia Smykova

Dr. Natalia Smykova graduated Moscow State University of Railway Engineering

At the present moment Dr. Smykova is a Director of Center of Coordination of International Scientific Education Programmes (CISP).

In the frame of CISP activity she actively participates as a coordinator in:

  • British Council Projects: Development of dual award programmes between UK and Russian higher education institution and Research cooperation award between Russian and UK universities;

  • Royal Society programmes

Dr. Smykova was involved in organization and preparation of Second international broadband communication Symposium held in Russian Federation, Moscow.

Her research interests include healthy lifestyle, wireless e-health. She has co-authored several publications in e-health area.

   
George Kolev

George Kolev has been Senior Scientist at Telecommunication Department at Moscow Institute of Informatics.

He also has been the Professor at the Department of Information Technology of Moscow State Mining University since September 2005.

He is active in aviation security areas (e.g. EUROCAE WG72). Scientific interests in the areas of eHealth, WiMAX 802.16 Mobile, Digital Video Coding. He published over 50 journals and conference papers. He is currently responsible for several projects of the ICT FP7 Research Program. In 2007 he has joined the Bridge Research Project (British Council) with representatives from Moscow State University (Faculty of Medicine).
   
Robert Veenis

Robert Veenis is Director International Strategic Sales for Proxim Wireless. Over the last seven years he has been actively involved in the development of Proxim's business in the wireless LAN and broadband wireless markets throughout EMEA and APAC. In his current role, Robert is responsible for the development of business opportunities and partnerships in several key areas; OEM business, Security and Surveillance, Transportation and Metro-Wireless market verticals.

Before joining Proxim, Robert was International Business Development Director for Merinta, a provider of middleware and applications for Internet terminals. In this role he was responsible for the development and management end users solutions in Europe.

Prior to Merinta, Robert worked in several other companies and roles ranging from technical manager to sales director at a large Dutch distributor.

He has close to 30 years of experience in the network and technology industry.
   
Roland Thienpont

Roland Thienpont is Senior Product Manager with Alcatel-Lucent's IP Division. Before joining the product management team he was R&D Director. He has over 20 years of experience in the telecommunication industry.
   

Martin Müller

Martin Müller is Technology Manager within the Test & Measurement Division of Rohde & Schwarz in Munich. He is responsible for global strategic marketing and product portfolio development regarding WiMAX and other technologies.

Martin joined Rohde & Schwarz in 2000. Prior to that his function was global Key Account Manager for Audi in the Automotive Industries. Before that, he operated as Development Engineer especially for Speech Recognition for the Network Operator Vodafone. Martin received his degree of Dipl.-Ing. in Electrical Engineering from Fachhochschule Munich / Germany in 1993.
