Some of our greatest challenges may already have an answer

UK science and engineering is internationally renowned for its creativity and innovation, with significant resources invested in research and development to create and apply new technologies.

Yet some of our greatest challenges may already have an answer.

Opening our minds to solutions which have been created to address specific problems within a particular vertical sector or industry can provide transformational answers elsewhere.

Horizontal Innovation™ is the effective transfer and application of pre-existing technologies and knowledge from one industrial sector to help meet a challenge or challenges in another.

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has trademarked Horizontal Innovation™ and has been leading the initiative to raise awareness and drive its wider take-up, working initially with the Motorsport Industry Association (MIA) and more recently with the seven High Value Manufacturing Catapult centres, most notably the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC).

We hope the content and information contained on these web pages will encourage and embed the widest possible take-up of Horizontal Innovation™. We look to inspire, inform and influence engineers, innovators and entrepreneurs the world over.
